Physical Education
Junior Cycle
The PE Department in OLM seek to encourage, promote and motivate students to participate in physical education and extra curriculum activities. The department strives to present students with a well balanced programme where students are given the opportunity to experience success in physical activity regardless of age, ability or gender. The PE department aim to promote confidence, skill, enjoyment and challenge within each activity.
Active Week
During the autumn term the PE curriculum was centred around preparing students for their mile challenge for active week. Lots of focus was on training methods, assessment of the students own fitness and recognising places in their area that they can train.
The PE Department are heading the application for an Active School Flag. The flag is a department initiative to encourage schools to get students active and to educate the students on the importance of being active and healthy. Every student should be taking part in 60mins of activity every day, this is a recommendation by the World Health Organisation.
As part of the application we ran an active week from 20th-24th October, which was a great success. Every year group received an extra PE class that week which involving taking part in a sport they may never have played before, the following is what they sampled:
- 1st Yrs: Boxing in keeper rd
- 2nd Yrs: Quick Cricket with Cricket Ireland coaches
- 3rd Yrs: Fencing
- 5th and 6th Yrs: Rugby with IRFU coaches
The sports council ran a whole school event called the mile challenge. Every student ran one mile in brickfield park with their year group, with past pupil John Travors being the pace maker.
Breaktime and lunchtime competitions took place. There was a quote of the read out by a student every day.
Students were encouraged to get active as much as possible and gained points for their coloured team. Every student and staff member was given a colour, so everyone was part of team that week. The yellow team won the active school week.
